Another day of extreme heat in the city

Another day of extreme heat is expected in our city today, with temperatures potentially feeling like the 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

In places like Long Island City in Queens and Astoria, some residents are dealing with power outages amid the high temperatures.

Con Edison said it expected to restore service by noon.

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory early Monday morning. It will remain in effect until 9 p.m. Wednesday.

“High temperatures and humidity will continue today. Heat indices will be in the 90s across most of the region, except along the southeast coast of Long Island, which will remain in the 90s. However, some parts of New Jersey could reach 100 degrees,” the service wrote in a message on social media about the weather in the region.

Mayor Eric Adams on Monday urged New Yorkers to take excessive heat seriously.

“I just want New Yorkers to know not to underestimate the heat,” Adams said. “As I’ve said before, a heat wave can be deadly and life-threatening if you’re not prepared. But our city is prepared. The entire apparatus is coordinating, including the MTA and Con Edison and here (at the Office of Emergency Management).”

Zach Iscol, New York City’s Commissioner of Emergency Management, said, “Since June 1, nearly 75 percent of daily high temperatures in Central Park have been above normal this year alone.”

“A heat advisory remains in effect for New York City. Avoid strenuous outdoor activities, rest, hydrate, and seek air conditioning or shade. “Please reduce energy consumption to protect grid reliability,” the Office of Emergency Management said in a message on social media.

Cooling centers across the city will remain open at least through Tuesday, Adams said.

Officials are urging residents who do not have access to air conditioning, especially the elderly, to use the facilities, some of which are pet-friendly. Find one here.
