The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) suspended the sale, distribution and use of some batches of male condoms from Fábrica de Artefatos de Látex Blowtex Ltda after they failed burst tests before the expiry date indicated on the label. The decision was published in this Thursday’s edition (23/2) of the Official Gazette.

Laboratory tests with some batches of Blowtex Zero and Blowtex Sensitive Super Aloe Vera condoms indicated that there may be an increased risk of breakage for products that are more than three years old, even though they were produced with a five-year shelf life. According to Anvisa, the result “makes it impossible to maintain its validity for up to five years”.

The burst pressure test is done to ensure that the male condom does not burst during intercourse. For this, it is inflated with a standard compressed air flow. If any loss of pressure is identified or it bursts before reaching the stipulated values, the failure is identified, with a greater risk of failure during sexual intercourse.

through a statement published on the company’s website, Blowtex justified that the items of the batches that passed the test had the wrong expiration date. Instead of 5 years as written on the batch packaging, the shelf life was only 3 years.

The company’s recommendation in case of condom breakage is to take additional precautions to reduce the chance of pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections.
