Replacing the oil heating and installing a new heating system – there is a subsidy from the state for this. The application can be submitted online.

The war in Ukraine and the associated gas conflict with Russia triggered the energy and price crisis in Germany in 2022. Classic fuels such as heating oil and gas became more expensive than ever. Food prices have also risen rapidly. All of this was eventually reflected in high inflation. For the first time in the history of the Federal Republic, these double-digit values were reached.

Exchange oil heating: don’t forget the heat exchange bonus – this promotion is available

The verb “sink” currently also describes the development of energy prices. fuel oil and gas has also been falling for several weeks now. Now the heating oil prices are also in the low flight. Nevertheless, many consumers are thinking about alternatives to oil heating after. These – such as heat pumps – are independent of the development of fuel prices. In addition, the necessary electricity can be produced at least partially by a solar system. The term “autonomous” is becoming more and more important.

From the State subsidized the replacement of an oil heating system in 2023 will also be subsidized – sometimes it’s not about little money. A subsidy of up to 40 percent is possible. consumers with an old oil heating benefit from double funding. On the one hand there is the basic subsidy – for example for the heat pump. On the other hand, the federal funding for efficient buildings (BEG) provides for a “heating exchange bonus”. The subsidy is granted for the exchange of an old oil heating system – the most important facts:

  • There are (basic) subsidies for regenerative heat generators such as heat pumps
  • The heating exchange bonus is granted in addition to a possible basic subsidy
  • For the application, a specialist company must confirm compliance with the requirements
  • With the basic subsidy and heating exchange bonus, you get more support overall
  • In principle, all grants must meet certain requirements

Subsidy for replacing the oil heating system: increase funding – this is how the application works

The heating exchange bonus is ten percentage points and is based on the basic funding credited. Anyone who chooses a heat pump as an alternative to oil heating, for example, gets a total of 40 percent funding with the basic subsidy (25 percent) and a special subsidy for heat pumps (heat pump bonus of 5 percent). Energy consultants or specialist companies can help with the application. Some banks are also available to advise their customers. The application process in five steps:

  1. Obtain offers and commission energy efficiency experts (EEE).
  2. Apply for funding online via the BAFA portal place
  3. Place an order and conclude a contract to implement the measure
  4. Submit proof of use online – if necessary with proof via the BAFA portal
  5. Checking and disbursement of the funding via the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA)

Important to note: The heating exchange bonus is only granted in combination with a basic subsidy for a regenerative heat generator. If you trade in your old oil heater for a new one, you get nothing. Also for the maintenance and renewal of an existing oil heating there is from Country no subsidy – even if the heating works more efficiently as a result. Therefore, it makes sense to inquire in advance about the costs of replacing an old oil heating system.

Apply for a subsidy for oil heating with funding: You should take this advice seriously

In case of doubt, it can be financially more lucrative to rely on a new heating system and the subsidy included Heat Exchange Bonus to claim something. The application process itself can be roughly divided into the five steps mentioned above. In the first step, offers are obtained and, if necessary, an EEE is commissioned. Very important: In the first step, no contracts may be concluded. BAFA provides all further details on the application process on its home page.

In the second step, the application for funding is submitted online via the BAFA portal. Access must be requested for this – the activation link will be sent by email. In the third step, the orders can be placed and the contracts – for example with a craft business – be completed. In its notes on state funding BEG, BAFA expressly points out that placing orders and concluding contracts before the funding is approved is at your own risk.

State subsidy for a new heating system: Apply for the subsidy online in five steps

This means that anyone who is already signing contracts and having the oil heating system expanded without the subsidy having been approved should do so first own expense. Therefore, it may make sense to wait for the grant to be approved before signing any binding contracts. In the fourth step, an online proof of use is sent to BAFA. If necessary, the necessary evidence is also submitted via the BAFA portal – these are then also checked by BAFA.

In the fifth and final step, the subsidy including the heat exchange bonus is paid out. BAFA also issues a notice of determination for the respective funding – this is sent by post and should be kept. Depending on which new heating system you choose, it falls amount of government funding higher or lower. There is about a higher subsidy for a heat pump than for a pellet heating system. However, a heat pump is also more expensive to buy – the following overview:

Funding for a new heater: Be careful – heat exchange bonus is not always granted

It is also possible to integrate oil heating into a hybrid heating system, for example with a heat pump. This measure is also carried out by Country supported by a grant. However, there is no heat exchange bonus, as the oil heater continues to operate in this case. Under certain circumstances, however, the option can make sense – for example, if a heat pump in an old building is too expensive in terms of electricity consumption. Here, too, it can help to calculate everything precisely and to get good advice.

All in all, there are a few things to consider when promoting heating systems. On the one hand, there are different subsidies for a new heating system. On the other hand, the heat exchange bonus for an old gas or oil heating system is not always granted. The basic requirement is that this is no longer used and that a specialist company confirms compliance with the requirements. In politics, some of the current subsidies do not go far enough. The CSU demands a “special bonus” for replacing old oil heaters.
