As part of the new State of Play, Sony’s counterpart to the Nintendo Direct, the Creators of the absolutely brilliant Batman Arkham series the next on Thursday evening Game from the Batman universe presented in more detail. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League advances the villains of the DC Universe, above all the Joker confidante Harley Quinn. Sounds promising at first, especially since Rocksteady is developing the game, which is responsible for the absolutely fantastic Batman Arkham games. But despite multiple references to the glorious past, that leaves me Sadly Suicide Squad game completely cold.

Suicide Squad lacks a vision

What’s the big difference between Suicide Squad and the Arkham games? The Batman games, especially the first part Arkham Asylum, had a developer’s vision that was noticeable at all times. That led to immersive games, in which one easily and gladly lost oneself.

The new project, however, Suicide Quad, awakens much more the Impression of a cold work instruction of the rights holder, according to whose specifications the developer Rocksteady stupidly works through the game point by point.

Suicide Squad is interchangeable

The result, as seen in yesterday’s State of Play, is a hyperactive jumping around with mostly unsympathetic and uninteresting characters, who, in my opinion, just shoot their way wildly and haphazardly through a fictional city. It lacks charm, atmosphere and uniqueness.

Ultimately, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League acts like a pretty much any loot shooter, that you’ve seen countless times, just with characters from the DC Universe. Nothing against loot shooters, don’t get me wrong. For the dark Batman and DC universe, however, it just seems completely inappropriate – and interchangeable.

A worthy sequel to the Batman Arkham series, please!

The Batman Arkham games were the complete opposite. I remember the first time I played Arkham Asylum on my PS3 back then. What a dense, immersive atmosphere, what a brilliant, crisp, fun gameplay!

I didn’t see any of that at the presentation of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League – unfortunately. A new game from Rocksteady as a worthy successor to the Batman Arkham games would be a cause for celebration.

Suicide Squad with online duress and in-game shop

On top of that, they come digital evil of our modern times, such as the online compulsion even in the pure single-player game and a shop with additional digital cosmetic content in exchange for microtransactions. “But that doesn’t affect the gameplay!” I’m sure some will reply now. Maybe, but that takes Suicide Squad even further away from the dark and dense immersion of the Batman Arkham games. And that’s just terribly unfortunate.
