Expert meteorologists from Mercosur address the prospects for what summer will be like in the southern cone of the continent. With extreme heat that was verified this year in the northern hemisphere, what is coming in the southern part of the world that it shares with Paraguay, could reach record temperatures.
With Italy in Europe (which registered up to 47 degrees) and Iraq in the East (where they suffered maximum temperatures of up to 66.7 degrees Celsius, the same scale used in our country), global warming has already begun its apocalyptic scourge.
What will happen in Paraguay and countries that share the usual summer heat levels with it?
Carlos Zotelo, Argentine, graduate in Atmospheric Sciences from the Center for Renewable Natural Resources of the Semi-Arid Zone (CERZOS) of CONICET, expressed: “Although there are connections between what happens in each hemisphere mainly due to marine currents, we are talking about much larger cycles. Now, that would be encouraging on the one hand, but on the other hand a few years ago there were only two heat waves; then there were five heat waves. Last year, nine heat waves, that is, it is going as an increasing trend. If, in addition, we add that we are (now) in winter, handling maximum temperature values typical of early spring, with 20 to 22 degrees (in Argentina. In Paraguay from 29 to 35 degrees) in many locations in the center of the country, it would seem then that we are on our way to a summer that is going to be complicated”, Zotelo said in an interview with Infobae.
IRAQ AND ITALY
The record temperatures in Europe and the Middle East, had Italy and Iraq, as the examples of maximum extreme heat that occurred in the summer of the northern hemisphere that is about to give way to autumn in those regions of the world.
The meteorological station of the International Airport of Persian Gulf registered a temperature of more than 66 degrees Celsius. According to experts, 71° is the threshold that the human being can withstand for a few hours, since once that limit is exceeded, the body can lose its cooling capacity.
In ItalyFor its part, on July 17, the temperature record reached 47 degrees of heat, reaching levels never before verified in the region. In the rest of Europe, the maximum reached marks qualified as “catastrophic” for that part of the world.

IN PARAGUAY
While the predictions about the climate have the borders of alarming, in Paraguay (the “naturally” hottest country in the southern cone), the outlook seems to be a step above what the rest of the neighbors describe as “desperate heat.”
For 10 years our country has been experiencing increasingly hot temperatures. Last year, in regions of the country (including Asunción) the maximums have reached up to 47 degree wind chill. Will this 2023 reach 50 degrees? The way the planet is heating up, that figure can be reached, and perhaps exceeded.
