• 28% of the French population plays video games every day
  • Surprisingly, more people over 50 than 15-24 year olds gamble daily
  • Gaming confirms its social aspect, and it is increasingly complementary to the viewing of streaming platforms

The cliché of the solitary, young gamer who is only interested in video games will take a hit. The Médiamétrie institute has just published the results of the Global Video study, which was carried out at the end of last year.

Among the main findings of this survey, we first observe that 28% of the French population plays games every day on TV or digital screens, ie 17% million people.

Video games and series go hand in hand

If we dive deeper into the typical profile of players, we note that the suitable players are 35 years old on average. 57% of them are men and 47% women. But, and this is the most surprising finding of this survey: regular players are more numerous in the over 50 age group (25%) than in that of 15-24 year olds (23%).

Médiamétrie also notes an overlap between the practice of video games and the viewing of streaming platforms. Analysts note that 92% of gamers watch video content every day: television, videos on the internet, or VoD/SCoD.

Services like Netflix and HBO have also made no mistake about it by offering various adaptations of video game sagas in series. We are of course thinking of the latest The Last of Us, or even the success of a Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

Video games and social connection

These results can be supplemented by a previous study released in 2021. It was again signed by Médiamétrie on behalf of Sell (for Syndical of Leisure Publishers), the organization which brings together the major French players in the sector.

It was then noted that the practice of video games had further intensified thanks to the pandemic and the confinements. Thus, 73% of French people said they play video games occasionally, that’s 38 million people.

This survey also insisted on the social aspect of gaming. 77% of parents said they played with their children, an increase of 11% compared to 2020. Similarly, 60% of respondents believed that this hobby is a good way to create social ties.

Are you surprised by these results, or have you observed the same changes in the practice of video games? Tell us in the comments.
