Baby seriously injured in deadly crash in Van Nuys

A woman was killed and five people, including a baby, were injured after a two-car crash Thursday night in Van Nuys, authorities said.

The 3-year-old boy was in serious condition after the crash at about 10:03 pm in the 6400 block of Woodley Avenue, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) said. An officer from the Los Angeles Police Department had to perform chest compressions on the little boy.

The deceased was 60 years old, while four other adults were injured, the LAFD added. The other victims were two women, ages 21 and 28, and two men, ages 22 and 30, according to the department. They were taken to the hospital in serious condition.

A witness, Marvin Ordóñez, said a group was drinking and smoking marijuana before someone got into a car and started speeding. That driver did not realize that another car was passing on the left side, and he hit it, Ordóñez said.

The Telemundo 52 helicopter showed images of the crash, including emergency responders carrying people away on stretchers. A white sheet covered the body of the deceased, who was lying on the highway.

Meanwhile, two sedan-style cars had front-end damage.

Ordonez said it’s common for people to drink alcohol and smoke marijuana in Woodley Park, across the street from where the crash occurred. He added that the police do not respond when people complain about the problem.
