Babylon: what is it about?
In Babylon, you will get to know two characters in depth. The first is Nellie LaRoy, played by Margot Robbie, an actress who dreams of being a Hollywood star and goes after every opportunity.
When she manages to get into a party, which packs the beginning of the film, she stands out for her appearance and soon grabs a small role. Then, on the film set, she shows that she really is talented and gets more opportunities.
Nellie is a character created based on Clara Bow, an actress who was very successful at the time of silent films, being one of the only ones to continue her career when interpretations with voices began. The artist had a difficult childhood, and not even in her adult life did she get the support she needed to live without trauma.
In addition to Nellie, we know Brad Pitt’s actor Jack Conrad, who is already successful in his film career. However, he begins to experience the first moments of decline, being overshadowed by new artists and no longer fitting in new productions.
Jack’s story is similar to the career of actor John Gilbert, who was one of the most talented and popular of his time, but who ended up in oblivion. Gilbert was married to four different actresses throughout his life, but he was also in relationships with many others.
Basically, then, Babylon transits between the rise and fall of the characters, bringing their stories in the midst of this chaotic universe of cinema. We see how the industry worked in the silent era and how complicated the transition to talkies was, even though it opened up new opportunities.
