news culture Bad news for the Netflix series Assassin’s Creed

No luck for the future live-action series Assassin’s Creed: Barely announced, it already inherits bad news.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Arcane, The Witcher… adaptations of video games have been the heyday of Netflix in recent years, which intends to continue to exploit the vein as much as possible. Among the current projects, there is that of a live-action series immersed in the prolific universe of Assassin’s Creed. The official announcement dates back to last September only, during a Ubisoft Forward conference; a “epic live-action adaptation” by Marc-Alexis Côté, VP executive producer of Assassin’s Creed, was then promised to a dreaming public.

If the details were still missing about him, we still knew that Jeb Stuart, Showrunner of Vikings: Valhalla (also recognized for having written the scenario of Die Hard) was to supervise the production. Eventually, it will be nothing; Steven Weintraub, journalist at Collider, recently spoke with Stuart who claimed he was no longer involved with the project. He will explain that a London team will inherit “unfortunately” of his vision instead of being able to develop theirs.

I know it will be great when it comes out. I think the Ubisoft guys are fantastic. I think it’s a terrific franchise. It was just a good, mutual time to move on, for both parties.

For the time being, the identity of the new showrunner of the series has not yet been revealed, but there is no doubt that Ubisoft Film and Television and Netflix want to surround themselves well for this potential hen with the golden eggs. Remember that this will already be the third live-action adaptation of the saga after a moderately well-received feature film (which counted on the presence of Michael Fassbender) as well as a short film, Assassin’s Creed Lineage, shot for the promotion of the second video game component.

Bad news for the Netflix series Assassin's Creed

The first project of a long line

This was one of the key announcements from the Ubisoft Forward conference held last September: The French video game giant signs for a slew of projects in partnership with the SVOD platform, which will notably receive several Ubisoft-branded productions. The first of these is none other than the sequel to a title both acclaimed by the press and the public, Unknown Soldiers: Memoirs of the Great War. This will be a platform exclusive. The sequel to The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot, a roguelite expected for 2023, is also planned. But what interests us more here is the announcement of a mobile game Assassin’s Creed which many make the connection with the Jade project. The software does not yet have a release date, but we already know that it will be a 3D open-world planted on Chinese land.
