Knocked up, instructions for use

Even early fans of Batman, Superman, and the Justice League can be caught off guard at times. The fertile imagination of the creative people who work in the lair of DC Comics gives birth, in the figurative sense, but also in the literal sense, to narrative arcs that are unexpected and instantly cult. In the latest release of the Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing series, the Joker awaits a happy event. No, you’re not dreaming. The Gotham Clown is indeed pregnant and… drum roll… giving birth to a child.

Issue #4 scripted by Matthew Rosenberg and illustrated by Francesco Francavilla features a clash between the Joker and Zatanna. The magician, disgusted by the love banter of the latter, casts her favorite spell on him. “On eno esle lliw dream evah ruoy ybab!” which can be translated as “No one else will ever have your baby!”. This has the unintended consequence of knocking up the Joker. In effect, the Dark Knight’s nemesis wakes up the next day nine months pregnant, and ready to… give birth. He ends up throwing up a miniature look-alike of himself.

The Joker terrorizes Netflix

On December 23, 2022, the Joker played by Joaquin Phoenix (Gladiator, Her) made a remarkable dancing entrance on Netflix, and climbed into the TOP 10 of the most watched films during the holiday season. Available in the SVOD service catalog stamped with the red N, this anarchist and libertarian reinterpretation of the Joker directed by Todd Phillips (the Very Bad Trip trilogy) was a critical and commercial success upon its release. Joaquin Phoenix received the Oscar for best actor for his performance at the 92nd edition (2019) while the feature film exceeded one billion box office receipts worldwide.
