Biden applauds Brazil for its global leadership on climate

MADRID, 17 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The president of the United States, Joe Biden, applauded Brazil this Wednesday for the regional and global leadership it has shown on climate matters and for hosting the summit to protect the Amazon.

During a call with the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Biden has anticipated a “green trade mission” to Brazil to promote investments in forests, land and energy.

“The President (Biden) applauded Brazil’s regional and global leadership on climate, including holding the Amazon Summit and the Amazon Dialogues to articulate a common agenda for sustainable development, combat deforestation, and address inequalities social and economic, and anticipated US plans for an upcoming ‘green trade mission’ to Brazil in September to promote investment in forests, land use and energy,” reads a White House statement.

Both leaders have spoken about cooperation on climate matters ahead of the UN Climate Summit (COP28), which includes a request from Biden to Congress for 500 million dollars (about 460 million euros) to support the fund of the Amazon and other related activities.

Another aid will be to raise 1,000 million dollars (about 919 million euros) through the United States International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) for the restoration of deteriorated lands both in Brazil and in the Amazon region.

Both Lula and Biden have assured that they will maintain active communication regarding the situation in Venezuela and Haiti.

Finally, the two leaders have pledged to work together to “promote and protect” the rights of workers, as well as achieve inclusive prosperity.
