The Peruvian Episcopal Conference They ruled on the deaths and injuries that have been reported in the last hours in the city of Juliaca, in Puno. This is evidenced in the sixth day of the reset of the demonstrations against the president Dina Boluarte and the Congress of the Republic, as well as the advancement of elections.

Through a statement, the bishops of Peru rejected the situation in the country. They also sent their condolences to the families of the victims after the tragedy.

“(…) We deeply condemn the death of the deceased compatriots, 12 so far, as well as the wounded civilians and police from the Region and Department of Puno, which occurred today, in the context of clashes during the development of citizen protests ”, reads the letter.

In addition, they regretted that the events occurred “as a consequence of distorting the right to protest”, but that “illegality” is resorted to. They also condemned the excessive use of force by the authorities. “Both situations are reprehensible and in both, those responsible must be identified promptly,” they added.

The Peruvian Episcopal Conference also made a call to identify the “just claims” of society. And he asked not to allow the country to be “destroyed” by one’s own actions.

“We call on the Government to urgently stop the violence and deaths wherever they come from; to the Public Ministry and the Judiciary, to investigate and sanction them; and to Congress, to make the decisions required by the situation and the social peace of the country. Let’s walk together to build peace in our beloved Peru”, he mentioned.

The President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, reported the first death in the restart of the protests against him. However, he indicated that he does not “understand” what is the reason why they go out to march. In addition, he described as “a pretext” the continuity of the demonstrations.

“Brothers from Puno and where they are still rising up in protests of what. It is not clear what you are asking for. I have already explained to you that the four political points are not in my hands, the only thing was the early elections and we already proposed it. (…) What you are asking for is a pretext to continuedeclared at the meeting of the National Accord Forum.
