The governor of the Brasilia region, Ibaneis Rocha, has been suspended from office for 90 days after the attempted uprising in the Brazilian capital.

A Brazilian Supreme Court judge on Sunday night suspended Brasilia Governor Ibaneis Rocha from office for 90 days over what he described as security breaches that allowed the invasion of official buildings by supporters of ex-president Jair Bolsonaro.

Alexandre de Moraes also ruled that the camps erected by supporters of Jair Bolsonaro near military bases should be evacuated within twenty-four hours and that the roads and buildings should be unblocked.

He also asked the social networks Facebook, Twitter and TikTok to block the accounts of users spreading anti-democratic propaganda.

He apologizes to Lula

Earlier in the day, Ibaneis Rocha, an ally of Jair Bolsonaro, had apologized to President Lula in a video. He called those responsible for the depredations of public buildings “real vandals” and “real terrorists”.

“We were monitoring all these movements with Minister Flavio Dino (…) At no time did we think that these demonstrations would take on such proportions,” he said.

Other allies of the outgoing president have also dissociated themselves from this violence, including Valdemar Costa Neto, president of the PL, Bolsonaro’s party, who regretted “a sad day for the Brazilian nation”.

Brazilian president calls for justice

“We will find them all and they will all be punished,” Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said of those responsible for the rampage from Araraquara, in the state of Sao Paulo (southeast).

“What these vandals, these fanatical fascists did (…) is unprecedented in the history of our country. Those who financed (these demonstrations) will pay for these irresponsible and undemocratic acts”, insisted the leader of State.
