PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Qroo. (apro).- A couple of British nationality suffered an armed attack in the jungle area of northern Quintana Roo. The man died, while the woman was taken seriously injured to the General Hospital of Playa del Carmen.
In addition, sources report that the woman was probably a victim of rape. The fact was disclosed on Friday. It happened in the jungle area of the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas, west of Playa del Carmen and south of Cancun.
According to testimonies, on Thursday a command made up of five people arrived at the La Esperanza ranch. There he found the British couple who lived in the house where they were attacked, while local workers let them flee.
The point where the event occurred is difficult to access. Hours later, some workers returned and found the place consumed by flames, the testimonies indicate.
They found the man lifeless, who the British media point out as Martin Artur Schmidt. Still alive, Sophie Wiggins, the 32-year-old woman, wife of the now deceased, was found.
Emergency services were immediately called. The Quintana Roo Police used a helicopter to take the woman out of the jungle and transfer her to Playa del Carmen, to the General Hospital.
Local government sources mentioned that the woman arrived seriously injured with gunshot wounds to the chest.
Until this Monday, Oscar Montes de Oca, Attorney General of Quintana Roo, briefly touched on the subject at a press conference he offered in Chetumal to discuss various issues.
“The motive was the robbery. Five subjects decided to rob the house they were occupying. Unfortunately, in the face of resistance from abroad, these subjects fired a 9-millimeter caliber firearm against them,” reported Óscar Montes de Oca.
During this Monday there was the presence of personnel from the British Consulate in the hospital, waiting to repatriate the woman and take the body of her dead compatriot.
Until the closure of the information, the arrest of those responsible has not been reported.
The British newspaper Daily Mail released the news in his country. It was reported that the couple resided in Quintana Roo. It can be seen that they were active in Bacalar and in the Riviera Maya.
The outlet highlights other events in which foreigners have been victims. Recently in Playa del Carmen, an Italian woman was shot to death in a cafe in the tourist area.
