A The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, scheduled for May, was presented today in Paris by the German executive Iris Knobloch, the first woman to preside over the festival, and by Thierry Fremaux, general delegate.

According to the announced list, the official competition for the Palm d’Or is reinforced with films made by women, with the presence of Alice Rohrwacher, Jessica Hausner, Kaouther Ben Hania, Justine Triet, Catherine Breillat and Ramata-Toulaye Sy.

The agency France Presse recalls that in the entire history of the festival only two directors have won the Palm d’Ouro: the French Julia Ducournau, in 2021, with ‘Titane’, and the New Zealander Jane Campion, in 1993, with ‘Piano’.

The official competition also includes films by names such as Nani Moretti, Aki Kaurismaki, Ken Loach, Marco Bellocchio, Wes Anderson and Hirokazu Kore-eda.

German director Wim Wenders and Chinese director Wang Bing have a double participation this year at the festival, in and out of competition.

Wim Wenders returns to Cannes with ‘Perfect Days’, shot in Japan, in official competition, and ‘Anselm (Das Rauschen der Zeit)’, in special screenings. The same goes for Wang Bing, with the documentary ‘Jeunesse’, in the competition, and “Man in Black”, outside of it.

This year, the jury of the official competition will be chaired by the Swedish director Ruben Ostlund.

Cannes will also host the documentary ‘Retratos Fantasmas’, by Brazilian director Kléber Mendonça Filho, ‘Cerras Los ojos’, the first film in almost thirty years by Spanish director Victor Erice, and the previously announced ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, by Martin Scorsese, and ‘Indiana Jones and the Marker of Destiny’, by James Mangold, which hits Portuguese cinemas in June.

The opening film of the Festival de Cannes will be ‘Jeanne du Barry’, shot and performed by French director Maiwenn, with the participation of actor Johnny Depp.

From the schedule revealed today, the ‘Un Certain Regard’ section will premiere the film ‘A Flor do Buriti’, by Brazilian director Renée Nader Messora and Portuguese João Salaviza, shot with the Krahô indigenous people of Brazil.

The two authors return to a section where, in 2018, they won the jury prize with the film ‘Chuva é Cantoria na Aldeia dos Mortos’ (2018).

The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will take place from the 16th to the 27th of May.

Next week, the films chosen from two of the festival’s parallel programs should be revealed, which have their own selections and awards: the Critics’ Week and the Directors’ Fortnight.

From Critics’ Week it is known that director of photography Rui Poças is part of the jury, while the Directors’ Fortnight honors ‘Vale Abraão’ (1993), by Manoel de Oliveira, placing on the official poster an image of actress Leonor Silveira, protagonist of the movie.
