PARS.- Chanel paid tribute again this Tuesday – January 23 – to the ballet for its spring-summer 2024 haute couture show, with elegant women of youthful appearance, radiant in pink tones and hairstyles with discreet bows.

“I tried to bring together the power and subtlety of bodies and garments in a very light collection, made of tulle, ruffles, pleats and lace,” explained Virginie Viard, Chanel’s artistic director, in the show notes.

For its men’s collection, the rival house Dior presented the previous week in Paris an entire collection also inspired by ballet and its Russian cone in exile, Rudolf Nureyev.

This aesthetic, called in English balletcorewith falsely modest appearances, won widely in 2023.

The Chanel house remembers that its relationship with ballet is an ancient story. A century ago, Gabrielle Chanel made her first compositions for the St. Petersburg Ballet.

The centerpiece, literally, of the show was the famous Chanel button, with the two interlocking C’s, represented by a giant installation that came down from the ceiling of the room.

The actress and model Margaret Qualley, daughter of Andie MacDowell, walked for the occasion, wearing an all-white outfit with a pierrot collar.

Then a sequence of transparencies opened, short straight skirts, jumpsuits, small capes decorated with embroidery, tulle pockets enhanced with sequins, braids and little flowers.

The legs are covered with bright white ballerina stockings, sometimes with a transparent trouser cover. Instead, her feet wear thin, black high heels instead of sneakers.

The iconic tweed jacket, designed by Coco Chanel in the 1950s and inspired by men’s Austrian jackets, returns in a light watercolor of creamy pink, sewn with very colorful threads.

There were also surprises, like a quilted version of the jacket.

The French brand gave itself a youthful touch by having the musical collaboration of rapper Kendrick Lamar.
