ChatGPT is set to come to the Windows 11 desktop - via PowerToys

It hardly needs mentioning that ChatGPT or GPT-4 is the topic of the hour. As an OpenAI investor, Microsoft relies particularly heavily on AI chatbots and has already integrated them into Bing. In Windows 11, this has so far been more of a sham – but that should change.

Since the last major Windows 11 update, Bing can also be used via the desktop or the search of the operating system, at least that is the promise of Microsoft marketing. In practice, however, this is anything but direct desktop integration, because in reality the relevant button or search field in the taskbar only opens a new browser window that leads to Bing with ChatGPT.

But soon the AI chatbot could and should also be usable directly via the operating system or the desktop, with the help of PowerToys. This makes the Microsoft tool collection for Windows 10 and Windows 11 even more powerful than it already is. Specifically, ChatGPT is to be integrated into PowerToys Run, which is the search area that appears in the middle of the screen that you get by default via PowerToys when pressing Alt and Space (via Windows Latest).

Plugin for PowerToys Run

ChatGPT for PowerToys Run is currently being developed by Simone Franco, the independent developer was previously responsible for the sideloaded app WSATools. Now he takes on ChatGPT and writes about it on GitHub: “A few weeks ago I tweeted about a small prototype plugin that I wrote in just two hours to integrate ChatGPT into PowerToys Run.” PowerToys lead developer Clint Rutkas saw this too and reached out to Franco: “Clint PMed me later that day and we had a great conversation about releasing this as a community plugin. So here I am!”

It’s only just beginning, Francos ChatGPT plugin but has already been officially included in the PowerToys pipeline. So it could be several weeks and maybe even months before it’s freely available. Incidentally, this does not rule out the possibility that Microsoft itself will integrate the chatbot “deeply” into the operating system, experts expect this for Windows 12 at the latest.
