This is a first since 1989: no French production is in the top 10 of the most viewed films at the cinema this year. According to the latest figures from the CNC, relayed by multiple mediait is the American blockbusters that are popular at the French box office in 2022.

While the country’s dark rooms are struggling to regain their pre-Covid-19 pandemic attendance, viewers have favored big franchises such as Top Gun: Maverick which tops the rankings with 6.6 million admissions or the new Avatar: The Way of the Water (4.5 million), yet released only last December.

The first French film in 11th place

In 2021 several French films such as Kaamelott: First Part, Les Tuches 4 Where BAC North – also directed by Cédric Jimenez – had managed to climb into the top 10 at the box office.

However, French productions achieved 27.2 million admissions in total against 54.5 million tickets sold for American productions.

These figures from the CNC come out as cinema attendance, which experienced its historic low for 40 years in September 2022, is gradually picking up: with 14.78 million admissions in November, theaters obscure French women sign their best month of the year.

If this attendance remains higher than that recorded in 2021, it is nevertheless still very far from that before Covid since French cinemas only total 133.88 million tickets sold in 2022, i.e. 29.9% less than on the same period in 2019, before the pandemic.
