The US registers fewer illegal border crossings after increased controls in Mexico

VICTORIA CITY.- A police officer and three alleged gunmen from a drug trafficking gang died during a confrontation in the Mexican town of Matamoros (northeast), authorities reported.

The shooting broke out in the middle of a police chase of a truck in which several armed men were traveling, three of whom were killed and one more fled, the government of the state of Tamaulipas said on its social networks, alleging that that belongs to Matamoros.

“Likewise, the unfortunate death of an element of the State Guard is reported,” the report added.

Matamoros, bordering the state of Texas (United States), is the scene of clashes between the Gulf Cartel and dissident gangs of that organization, according to authorities.

That town is also an arrival point for migrants who cross illegally into the United States through the Rio Grande.

Violence linked to organized crime leaves more than 450,000 dead in Mexico since 2006, when an anti-drug operation was launched with military participation. Since then, the country has also accumulated some 100,000 missing people, according to official statistics.
