Cristiano Ronaldo misses a penalty, but Portugal comes back to life

In the midst of a dramatic match and tears of Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal reached the quarter-finals of the European Championship after beating Slovenia on penalties on Monday.

The match went to penalties after Ronaldo took the penalty in extra time in the 114th minute, but Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak saved the shot. Regulation time and extra time ended 0-0.

In the penalty shoot-out, Ronaldo scored Portugal’s first and Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved three Slovenian shots, from Josip Ilicic, Jure Balkovec and Benjamin Verbi.

Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva also scored for Portugal to make it 3-0 with two shots to spare.

Portugal will face France in the quarter-finals on Friday in Hamburg, a rematch of the 2016 final which Portugal won in Paris.
