Cuban actress Isabel Moreno dies in Miami

MIAMI.- Isabel Morenogran actress Cuban who triumphed on and off the island, died in Miami this weekend. He was 82 years old. The cause of death is still unknown.

“With deep sadness, CubaActors regrets the death of Isabel Moreno, one of the greatest Cuban actresses. Born in Havana on January 28, 1942, Isabel stood out as an emblematic figure in the theater, the cine and the television. She was part of the prestigious Teatro Estudio group for more than 20 years and was a professor at the National School of Art of Cuba and the Higher Institute of Art. Isabel is especially remembered for her role in The Beauty of the Alhambra, which became an icon of Cuban cinema. Throughout her career, she participated in numerous theater productions, such as A Streetcar Named Desire, Cold Air, The Millionaire and the Suitcase, and Blood Wedding. Her talent led her to work in Venezuelan and American television and film, continuing her artistic legacy outside of Cuba. Among her most notable films are Soy Cuba, Luca, and Un hombre de suito. “Our most sincere condolences go to her family and friends,” reads the Cuba Actores Facebook profile.

The actor Héctor Noas, for his part, lamented the death as did other pages specialized in Cuban cinema that reported the news.

“I have just learned, from my friend Gilda Santana, of the death of Isabel Moreno, who has undoubtedly been one of the greatest Cuban actresses. Seeing her in the theater was a master class in acting. She had an impressive physique and a wonderful voice. What a sad loss, dear Isa! For those who admired you, your legacy remains in the cinema, above all, in that character in The Beauty of the Alhambra, which you built yourself with the complicity of your beloved Enrique. It was a gift they gave each other! For your theater colleagues in Cuba, a group of certainly legendary anecdotes and for me, the affection, admiration, respect and your smile. May you have a journey of light and existence, may you be received in another dimension as you deserve, because you have been one of the greats. I love you!” Noas wrote on Facebook.

Isabel Moreno began her artistic journey on stage as part of the theater group directed by Raquel Revuelta. Throughout her career, she shone in theatrical pieces, including Blood Wedding, Bernarda or A Tram Called Desire.

After making his theater debut with the play The Coffee Cup, in 1961 he joined a group of young actors trained in pantomime. And then he continued his work on the stage for decades.

His talent transferred to film and television. On her native island he acted in La bella del Alhambra, alongside Beatriz Valds. Soy Cuba, Luca and A Successful Man are other of her most remembered films.

In 1987, the play And Who’s Going to Have Coffee? It earned her recognition from the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba, which named her best leading actress. Twenty years later, the Association of Entertainment Chroniclers (ACE) awarded her as best actress for her work Ok.

For some years he also dedicated himself to teaching. He taught acting classes at the National School of Art of Cuba and at the Higher Institute of Art.

At the beginning of the 90s he went into exile in Venezuela, where he acted on television. He settled in the US in 2001, where he continued his career in theater, film and television.

Her most recent performances on the small screen were in Betty in NY (2019), Loli’s Luck (2021) and The Woman of My Life (2022).

Her work in Betty in NY, a version of Ugly Betty, earned her another recognition from ACE, which awarded her the award for best female television co-acting in 2020.

In the cinema, he was placed under the orders of Lilo Vilaplana in the film Plantados (2021), which tells anecdotes from the Cuban political prison.

Isabel Moreno was born in Havana, Cuba, on January 28, 1942. She married actor Gaspar González in the 1970s, with whom she had three children (two girls and one boy).
