Death at 78 of Michel Laurent, performer of the hit “My Queen of Sheba”

This figure of the yéyés had participated in the “photo of the century”, which in April 1966 brought together some forty stars of the yéyés. He had also met with worldwide success with the song Queen of Sheba.

The singer Michel Laurent, interpreter of Queen of Shebaplanetary hit released in 1967, died this week at the age of 68, AFP journalist Jean-François Guyot announced on Twitter.

This figure of the yéyés, born in Tunisia in December 1944, had participated in the famous “photo of the century” by Jean-Marie Périer, who had brought together in April 1966 some forty French stars for the magazine Hi buddies. The singer is seated in the photo next to Michel Berger.

Over 50 million copies sold

Michel Laurent, real name Michael Taïeb, had many successes between 1963 and 1967 with pieces like The Puppet and especially Ma Queen of Shebasold more than 50 million copies worldwide.

Celebrated in France, but also in Japan, the song had also inspired a cover by Sylvie Vartan in 1973. In the 1970s, Michel Laurent still met with success, in particular Sing Sing Barbarabefore ending his career.
