After the violent death of African American Tire Nichols as a result of a brutal police operation in the US city of Memphis, further details came to light.

On Wednesday it became known that one of the police officers involved took cell phone photos of the seriously injured man and then sent one or more. This emerges from documents of an internal investigation by the police, which the newspaper “New York Times” published. The 29-year-old Nichols died three days after the operation in the hospital.

The documents describe in detail the behavior of each police officer on the evening of January 7th. Video showed the officer taking photos of Nichols after he was brutally beaten by several officers following a traffic stop. According to the documents, he sent the footage to several people, including outside the police force.

The case caused horror across the country and sparked protests in many cities. Six officers have since been dismissed from the police force. Five of them – including the officer who took the photos – are due to be tried for second-degree murder.

In the state of Tennessee, this corresponds to an intermediate stage between murder and manslaughter. You face long prison terms. Deadly assaults by the police are common in the United States. Afro-Americans are disproportionately affected by this. (dpa)
