Death of Disney hit composer confirmed

LOS ANGELES.- Richard Sherman, el compositor behind songs of movies classics of Disney as Mary Poppins y The jungle bookdied yesterday -May 25- at the age of 95, the film and entertainment company said.

The musician died in Beverly Hills due to an illness associated with his advanced age, Disney reported.

Composer with more than 200 songs for Disney

Sherman and his brother Robert, who died in 2012, worked as songwriters for Disney between 1960 and 1973, during which time they wrote more than 200 songs for 27 films and two dozen television productions.

In a statement, Disney described Richard Sherman as a key member of founder Walt Disney’s inner circle of creative talent.

The brothers’ work included Chim Chim Cher-eea 1964 hit film Mary Poppinswhich earned them an award for Best Song and another for Best Soundtrack.

“We will be forever grateful for the mark Richard left on the world and extend our deepest condolences to his family,” Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a statement.

The brothers were also responsible for hits like It’s a Small World y I Wan’na Be Like You, of The jungle book.

“The work of the duo remains Walt Disney’s quintessential lyrical voice,” the company said.
