Despicable Me 4 remains at the top of the US box office

Despicable Me 4 remained at the top of the ticket office this weekend in the United States, grossing $44.7 million for a total of more than $200 million, according to estimates revealed on Sunday.

But the surprise was that the little horror film Longlegs more than doubled the debut of Fly Me to the Moon, a romantic comedy with Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum that cost $100 million.

Longlegs, the serial killer story starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage, grossed an estimated $22.6 million from 2,510 theaters. It’s the best performance ever for Neon (of Parasite fame), which acquired the $10 million film for distribution. Written and directed by Osgood Perkins, Longlegs also had the best opening performance for an R-rated movie so far this year.

At the other end of the spectrum was Apple Original Films’ Fly Me to the Moon, which earned just $10 million. It was even further behind Inside Out 2, which came in third with $20.8 million, and A Quiet Place: Day One, which came in fourth with $11.8 million.

Fly Me to the Moon, distributed by Sony and directed by Greg Berlanti, opened in 3,356 theaters, with an audience that was mostly over 45 years old.

A24 gave Sing Sing a limited release, in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles. It earned 137,119, one of the best limited releases so far this year. The film, directed by Greg Kwedar, is about an arts program at Sing Sing prison, and features real-life characters such as Clarence Maclin, in his film debut. cineSing Sing will continue to be shown in four theaters during July and will go into national distribution in August.

Finally, Twisters, which opens in North America on Thursday, opened internationally, grossing $11.5 million in 38 markets including Australia, Mexico and Brazil.
