A 12-year-old resident of the United States had to undergo surgery to remove a tumor weighing about 1.4 kg from her ovary. The clinical case was reported in the American Journal of Case Reports.

The girl had been suffering for two years with irregular menstrual cycles and frequent abdominal pain. The young woman also had a milky discharge leaking from her breasts, but the possibility of pregnancy was ruled out after examinations. Doctors diagnosed the patient as a case of hormonal disorder.

However, the abdominal pains became even more intense and the girl returned to the hospital. When performing an ultrasound, the medical team found that the teenager had a rare type of ovarian cancer, called granulosa cell tumor.

The girl had to undergo surgery to remove the cancer and the left ovary. Four days after the procedure, she was discharged.

Granulosa cell tumor is a rare type of cancer. According to the report published in the scientific journal, this type of neoplasm represents 5 to 8% of all diagnosed ovarian tumors.

In addition, this type of cancer is more common in older women: only 5% of cases occur in young people.
