Water from Lake Annecy will now be used to heat and cool an entire district. In all, 550 homes, a hotel and a nursing home will benefit from it, while the inauguration of this loop of water took place today.

It is a setting surrounded by mountains. Its turquoise waters and its grandiose landscapes have made its reputation. This Thursday, May 11, the lake ofAnnecy (Haute-Savoie), becomes a source of energy. On one of its banks, hidden underground, is a vast technical room dug, with within it, three large heat pumps that have been running for a few days. They use water from the lake to produce heat. These are calories that heat pumps will recover and amplify to heat an entire district. “The interest of this source is that when it is cold outside, the water will remain at 7 degrees and will allow very important performances to be maintained”explains Romain Roy, head of the IDEX heating network.

Less 2,000 tons of CO2 emissions

The other interest is that in summer, it’s an air conditioning circuit that the water will cool everything down. In both cases, all the water withdrawn is returned to the lake. It is a district of Annecy, recently emerged from the ground, which will benefit from it. Water from the lake should provide 95% of heating needs, the rest being provided by a gas boiler as a backup. This represents a saving of 15 to 20% on gas bills. According to the promoters, this should make it possible to avoid the release into the atmosphere of more than 2,000 tonnes of CO2.
