According to the police, the German village of Lützerath in the Rhenish lignite mining area, which is occupied by climate activists, should not be cleared until Wednesday at the earliest. The Aachen police chief Dirk Weinspach said today.

Legally, an eviction is possible the day before, but an information event for residents scheduled for the same day is awaited.

The police are facing a difficult, challenging operation with considerable risks, said Weinspach at the press conference. The village of Lützerath near Aachen is to make way for the expansion of a large opencast mine. Climate activists protest against the demolition.

For a long time, activists have been hiding in the place, which has since been abandoned by the former residents, and erected barricades, among other things. Numerous additional protesters have come to Lützerath in the past few days with a view to the imminent eviction.
