Federal Minister of Justice Buschmann is pushing for a speedy fight against illegal migration

Despite reservations from the Greens: Control at the EU’s external borders should be implemented quickly – longer transfer periods should also relieve municipalities

Osnabruck. Federal Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann spoke out in favor of swiftly combating illegal migration to Germany. Buschmann told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ): “We have to fight illegal migration to Germany effectively, and quickly.” Illegal migration also undermines the acceptance of people who legally seek help in need. The municipalities are currently suffering particularly from so-called irregular secondary migration. In principle, the EU state in which the people arrive is responsible for asylum seekers. “But there is a large number of refugees who come to Germany irregularly, for whom another EU member state is actually responsible. We have to change that,” said Buschmann. “We therefore want to check at the external borders in future whether a person has a chance at all of obtaining a right of residence in Europe,” announced the minister. He is glad “that the federal government is now speaking out in favor of checks at the external borders, as a result of our efforts.” However, the project for stricter controls at the EU’s external borders is highly controversial, especially among the Greens.

Buschmann also sees an urgent need for action with regard to the so-called transfer period. “If the transfer to the known, responsible EU member state is not carried out within six months, responsibility is automatically transferred to Germany. This period of six months is too short. We are therefore committed to reducing the so-called transfer period from six to twelve months,” said Buschmann. Then you have more time to clarify the legal situation and enforce the departure. “This will make a significant contribution to relieving the burden on the municipalities,” says the Federal Minister of Justice.
