According to the Federal Statistical Office In 2022, every fourth household in Germany had a fitness device. At the beginning of 2022, there were 12.5 million of these fitness machines in private households in Germany. They were distributed among around 10.4 million households (27.2%). The proportion has increased slightly in recent years – also in the wake of the corona pandemic: In 2017, for example, it was “only” 25.3%.

The trend is definitely going in the direction of having second or third devices ready. It’s not surprising either: one of them may have bought a rowing machine in addition to the treadmill or ergometer. In households that lived in their own property, the devices were most common with a share of 36.8%. If one again differentiates according to household type, couple households without children are best equipped with fitness equipment with a share of 35.2%. For couple households with children, the proportion was 28.5%. 18.9% of the households of those living alone had at least one piece of fitness equipment.

Important: the evaluation is rather incomplete. The data basis for the equipment of the households are the current economic accounts (LWR) 2022. Results for households whose regular monthly net income is 18,000 euros and more are not taken into account in the LWR. In accordance with the legal requirements, the LWR does not include households of self-employed persons (commercialists, self-employed farmers and freelancers). So there is a significant part missing.
