Mexico City. The world of ambassadors remains in the shadow of public opinion. They are reserved, flee from the spotlight and are terrified of scandals.

In the era of hyper transparency, where social networks represent windows into the private, and even intimate, lives of politicians, athletes, actors and anonymous people, it is appreciated that diplomacy avoids becoming a trend of scandals, however, it is not Bad idea for ambassadors to use platforms to get closer to society.

In certain segments of Mexico, there is a belief that ambassadors spend their time toasting and inaugurating exhibitions. This position may remain due to the limited contact of diplomats with public opinion.

To address various issues on the relationship between Mexico and Germany, the embassy of that European country launched the podcast “Guten Tag Embajador” (Good Morning Ambassador)

With four episodes so far, Ambassador Wolfgang Dold has addressed various issues of bilateral interest: economy, climate change and the war in Ukraine.

“I would like to talk about the different issues that unite Germany and Mexico. There are many things we can talk about, culture, the economy, science, sports. When Mexicans think of Germany, most think of modern cars and technology top, or sausages and freshly served draft beers, that’s fine but there is much more than that that unites our two countries,” said the diplomat in his podcast.

For the ambassador with a 30-year career, the podcast format allows him to talk about any topic in more detail and without losing its validity.

Business relationships

Every two weeks there will be a new chapter of the podcast, in the most recent, Ambassador Wolfgang Dold addresses trade relations with Mexico.

“In Latin America, Mexico is Germany’s main trading partner and vice versa, Germany is Mexico’s main trading partner in Europe. Globally, Germany is Mexico’s fourth largest trading partner; both countries traded goods worth more than 24 billion euros last year”, he comments.

The German ambassador also recalled that the Global Agreement between Mexico and the European Union needs to be approved: “You have to be a little patient,” he says.
