Guard nearly killed after beating inside Harris County Jail

HOUSTON – A Hispanic Harris County jail guard recently received a severe beating while conducting a surveillance round at the hands of a man charged with aggravated homicide.

Officer Valdiviez suffered bills and deep lacerations to his face and other parts of his body.

According to initial investigations, Valdiviez was attacked from behind on the night of July 1 when he was inspecting the area where inmates accused of the most serious crimes are located in one of the largest prisons in Texas.

“I almost lost my life, not even my heart stopped beating,” Valdiviez told Telemundo Houston from the hospital where he is recovering from the attack allegedly committed by Christian Dillard, who faces the death penalty if found guilty of the crime of aggravated homicide.

The inmate has been in jail since April 2020.

The Harris County Jail faces serious inmate overcrowding problems. The penitentiary center houses more than 800 people accused of homicide.

Harris County Sheriff Ed González acknowledges the plight of the jail and has already made public the condition of the jail that houses some 10,000 detainees.

González has highlighted, on different occasions, that the overcrowded situation is such that inmates in the Harris County jail spend an average of six times longer than the time they are confined in the rest of the country’s jails. It should be remembered that county jails are a transit center for those people who are later sent to state jails.

Valdiviez has worked as a jail guard since October of last year.
