Haiti's transitional council elects new prime minister

PORT-AU-PRINCE.- Garry Conillean experienced development specialist at the United Nations (UN), arrived on Saturday at Haiti to assume the position of prime minister at a critical time for the Caribbean country.

Appointed by a transitional council with a view to paving the way towards stable elections, Conille replaces interim Prime Minister Michel Patrick Boisvert. His arrival in the capital, Port-au-Prince, was marked by a meeting with Boisvert, the government said in a statement.

Conille has played a leading role as regional director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for Latin America and the Caribbean since January 2023. In addition, he has previous experience as Prime Minister of Haiti during the period between October 2011 and May 2012, under the presidency of Michel Martelly.

In a context marked by the increase in gang violence in various parts of the Haitian capital and its surroundings, Conille’s inauguration occurs at a crucial moment for the country, while awaiting the deployment of an international police force backed by the UN, coming from countries like Kenya.

Haiti, located on the island of Hispaniola next to the Dominican Republic, faces a series of challenges that require firm and coordinated management to restore stability and development in the nation.
