– First there are hearings from the first district court hearing in 2019, when the verdict was overturned, and then from the latest hearing in the district court, says Per Magnusson, legal representative for Vapsten Sameby.
Interrogation for two days
The recording of the interrogation started on Tuesday afternoon and will continue until Thursday lunchtime.
Just like the representative for Vapsten Lappby, Per Magnusson believes in a victory in the Court of Appeal and that the district court’s verdict is upheld. In that case, it would mean that Vapsten Samiby would retain the exclusive right to reindeer husbandry in its area in the Tärnaby and Lycksele areas.
The members of the Sámi village are descendants of the Sámi who were forcibly moved south from the Karesuando tract at the beginning of the 20th century.
Vapsten Lappby’s descendants live in the area where the forced relocation took place. When they lost the dispute in the district court, they appealed.
I think the sentence is fixed
Vapsten Sameby’s lawyer does not think the verdict will be changed.
– It is my assessment that the district court’s judgment stands. Maybe with other justifications, but it will not change, says Per Magnusson to SVT Sápmi.
