Hochul signs new laws for electric bicycles

Governor Katry Hochul signs eight bills into law seeking to raise the bar for the manufacturing and sale of lithium-ion batteries.

The new laws require retailers to be better prepared for fires caused by the equipment built into electric bikes and scooters, and require manufacturers to place warning labels to unplug the battery when not charging.

The sale of equipment that does not meet certain standards is also prohibited, among other safety and protocol laws.

Electric scooters and bicycles have become very popular in the city since the City Council legalized them in 2020.

However, the batteries in these means of transport are capable of exploding and causing fires, especially those that are of low quality.

Last year alone, there were more than 150 injuries and 18 deaths caused by lithium-ion batteries.
