Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn opened a bridge between the community and health professionals that allowed Cynthia Felix Jeffers, president of the Sunset Park Lions Club, to be a nurse for a day.
“We get to see patients and learn what they do every day and they really save lives,” Cynthia said. “It’s one thing I’m very proud of that they chose me to have this opportunity because many times you see it and don’t remember what what they do and truly this experience is something that I will remember all my life.
Patricia Alegre, who has been working as a nurse in the pediatric area for 18 years, says that the program increases empathy towards her work.
“At least it makes me feel good to know that someone experiences what I am doing, for my day, that my day is 12 hours,” Alegre said.
As a nurse, Alegre explains, her job is not only to administer medications, but also to show empathy and maintain good communication with patients, as in the case of Randy de Jesús.
“They are very kind, very attentive,” Randy said.
After spending the morning with a nurse, this year’s nearly 40 participants received a certificate for their participation.
“I think that especially people who can then be a little bit of a voice, outside, who can say the impact that Maimonides has, grenades and all the little pieces in grenades, from the front desk associate, the nurse,” explained Bettina Alonso , head of fundraising.
Maimonides Health is Brooklyn’s largest healthcare system, its three hospitals serving more than 320,000 patients each year.
