How Kofi Works | Practical Guide

Ko-fi is a social platform to connect content creators with fans and admirers, and aims to generate income by promoting creative works online. The site works from direct donations on the profile page of the creators, whose amounts can be transferred through a PayPal or Stripe account.

Who is Ko-fi for?

The platform is aimed at streamers, podcasters, artists, writers, photographers, filmmakers, cosplayers, artisans and other creators who want to produce content and receive financial support from their audience.

Despite a similar footprint to Privacy and OnlyFans, Ko-fi does not allow content that features nudity, violence or hate speech.

How to configure Kofi

Your Ko-fi account must be set up via the website ko-fi.com and personalized with username, profile picture and topics of interest. You are also invited to choose between two objectives: to be a content creator or to help other creators — an option that can be changed at any time.

When accessing a user’s profile, you will also find a donation section to “pay a coffee” to the creator — an expression used to represent the minimum tip amount in the chosen currency. It is possible to pay or receive several “coffees” at once.

In the free version of Ko-fi, there is no fee charged by the platform on amounts received for coffees (donations). However, there is a 5% fee on commissions, subscriptions and sales.

Better than Gold

There is a paid version of the platform called Ko-fi Gold in which there are no fees charged on commissions, sales or recurring subscriptions.

Ko-fi Gold also offers some additional benefits such as:

Subscribers can also change the name of “coffee” donations to other expressions of their choice.

The Ko-fi Gold monthly subscription costs $8, or $6 per month for the annual plan. To learn how to boost a Ko-fi account, check out tips for content creators to gain fans on social media.
