Inserting visual elements such as a border or frame into Word can serve to make a page stand out or style documents. The feature can be used to attract interest or strengthen a visual identity within a document.

Inserting frames into pages in Word does not shrink the text field of the document if you set a spacing relative to the edge of the page that does not exceed the margin.

How to Make a Frame in Word

You can make a border in Word both in the app for Windows and for macOS using the same methods. Some steps may vary in older versions of Word and the “Borders and Shading” feature is not available in the web version of the app.

On Windows or macOS

  1. On the top tab, click on “Design”;
  2. Go to “Page borders”;
  3. Choose the border setting;
  4. Customize style, color and width;
  5. Select “Apply to” entire document or sections;
  6. Enter “Options” to adjust the edge distance;
  7. Click “Ok” to apply.

To include borders and frames in specific parts of documents, such as paragraphs or images, select the section you want to highlight and then enter the “Design | Borders and Shading” to apply the effect.

Border options in Word

The design tab for making borders in Word has four settings options:

  • Box;
  • Sombra;
  • 3D;
  • Custom.

These options can be changed between a variety of stroke styles and colors, with the following alternatives:

The position and distance of the frame can be configured within the “Borders and Shading Options” section, measuring from the edge of the page or the margin of the text.

Word has other features for making passages stand out on pages, such as aligning and formatting text or placing shapes in documents.
