Kristjan Čeh threw over 70 meters in his first throw during Friday’s competition in Doha. With that result, he is second in the world this year. The Swedish runner Andreas Almgren broke his own Swedish record in the 3000 meters.

Slovenian discus thrower Kristjan Čeh showed who is the reigning discus world champion. Already in the first throw, his result was measured at 70.89 meters, which is the second best result in the world this year. It would also be Čeh’s longest of the evening.

– I’m very satisfied, it’s not world best, but it’s close. I’m coming straight from a hard training camp, so after three rounds I was completely exhausted. I was tired even then. But a good start to the season, says Čeh to SVT.

The Swedish discus stars Daniel Ståhl and Simon Pettersson also participated in the competition. Ståhl grabbed second place behind Čeh, with a result of 67.14 meters. Pettersson threw 64.30 meters and finished in sixth place.

Swedish record

Ståhl and Pettersson were not the only Swedish athletes who performed well. The middle distance runner Andreas Almgren broke his own Swedish record in the 3000 meters. His new record now reads 7.37.05, which is over two seconds better than the previous record.

– It is in May that I will turn it up properly. So that I am already at these levels in fairly windy conditions, it bodes well, says Almgren.
