A man accused of hitting a 17-year-old boy and hit-and-run appeared in court on Monday.

The parents of Bryan Calle, who remains hospitalized in a coma, tell how difficult it was for them to see 58-year-old John Egan in person for the first time in court. Egan is charged with drink driving when he collided with Bryan.

Head down, not saying a word, accompanied by his lawyer, John Egan made his first court appearance.

“He feels almost powerless to see the Lord there, but what we say there is always nothing, there is no hatred, there is no resentment… on the contrary, we pray for him,” says Segundo Calle, Bryan Calle’s father.

The former Waterbury zoning official faces charges in the May 26 hit-and-run that left Bryan Calle, an Ecuadorian teenager, in a coma. This while Bryan was leaving work on his scooter.

Court documents indicate that two invoices in the name of John Egan recorded the purchase of at least 14 alcoholic beverages, including cocktails, beers and wine.

Second, faced with the pain of seeing his son bedridden, he sends a heartfelt message, “I never thought in life to see my son lying on that bed like this, I would like all people to be aware of that, if they want to drink, let them drink but not drive, no”.

He and his wife Rosa arrived in Connecticut from Ecuador a week after the incident, after a difficult battle to obtain a three-month humanitarian visa. Bryan had been in the country for a few months, after crossing the southern border.

“No, the doctors, in my opinion, are even harsh because they tell me that he will not walk again, he will not walk, he will not get out of bed…after a while they make me a little afraid,” said Segundo .

Although doctors say Bryan’s heart and lungs are working, his brain remains unresponsive.

Now the family must decide whether to continue life support measures, or not.

Egan’s next court date is June 28.
