O International Day for Monuments and Sites is an initiative of the International Council for Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), whose theme is “Changing Heritage”, expressing its concern for the “climate emergency”, as it had already referred to in 2020.

“Heritage transforms us and, at the same time, helps us to adapt to a world in constant mutation. An example of this are the monuments and historic buildings that are presented as models of good practices in sustainability and innovation for the development of new solutions architecture adapted to climate change, or even the use of local resources, thus reducing the carbon footprint with the export of materials”, says the DGPC in a statement

Under this motto, the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), which promotes the initiative, intends to “convey to the public that traditional knowledge and practices, as well as the versatility of cultural heritage can be part of the solutions to a changing world “, proposing “to raise public awareness of the diversity, resilience, innovation and contemporaneity of cultural heritage and, at the same time, call for its safeguarding and dissemination”.

On Tuesday morning, the “Heritage and Change” meeting will take place, organized by the DGPC in collaboration with ICOMOS, at the University Institute of Lisbon, with the participation of the Deputy Director General of Cultural Heritage, Rita Jerónimo, and president of ICOMOS-Portugal, Soraya Genin.

In Portugal, the activities to be carried out between next Tuesday and the following Sunday, April 23, within the framework of the International Day for Monuments and Sites, which already amount to close to three hundred, mostly guided, guided and thematic visits, are available at www.patrimoniocultural.gov.pt.
