MEXICO CITY (apro).- President Andrés Manuel López Obrador considered that the budget requested by the National Electoral Institute (INE) for 2024 “is a lot,” since “about 10 billion pesos should be saved,” and he insisted on sending a constitutional reform in electoral matters for next year.
He noted that the review of this reduction will have to be done by the Chamber of Deputies, which has the power to approve the budget for 2023, considering that there are many shortcomings and needs.
“We are proposing, in the reform initiative that was rejected in Congress, a decrease in the budget. We are going to raise it again because, before I finish, I am going to send an initiative to reform the Constitution in electoral matters, ”he said.
The federal president reiterated that he will also send a reform initiative so that judges, magistrates and ministers are elected by the people; “I also have two or three pending initiatives that have to do with the social, but at the right time”.
The budget that the INE requests
The INE reported the figures of the 2024 Draft Budget for a total of 23 thousand 757 million pesos, which include the base budget and the Institutional Project Portfolio.
For the basic and permanent operation of the Institute they considered requesting 13 thousand 128 million pesos; for the Institutional Project Portfolio, the INE will require 10 thousand 629 million pesos; and as a precautionary budget, the Institute will request three thousand 529 million pesos
The last amount is considered “to face an eventual Popular Consultation and the extraordinary elections that the competent authorities have. In case of not being carried out, these precautionary resources would be returned in full to the Treasury of the Federation.
