Through Twitter, the director David Ayer said that he would have spoken with James Gunn and the latter said that it is time to release the mysterious Ayer Cut of ‘Suicide Squad’ from 2016.
Some love it, many others do not see it with such good eyes, but it is true: the movie of Suicide Squad keep making noise. And in the last days, the name of that tape sounded again since it is said that James Gunn would plan to release the so-called ‘Yesterday Cut’ of suicide squad.
We refer of course to the 2016 film directed by David Ayer (not to be confused with the tape that Gunn himself directed in 2021), which even after seven years continues to cause a certain mysticism. Because? Well, because it is known that the cut released in theaters that year was not the one that the director wanted to deliver to the public.
Will James Gunn release the Yesterday Cut of ‘Suicide Squad’? This was said by David Ayer himself
Surely you remember the madness that meant for the fans of the DC extended universe in the cinema when the Snyder Cut of Justice League. People were finally able to see what Zack Snyder’s real vision of that movie was, showing us many details that improved the experience (or so some fans say) compared to the final cut that was shown in 2017.
And if things line up cool, we could see something similar with the Suicide Squad. As we told you, it is said that James Gunn is eyeing the launch of the Yesterday Cut of suicide squadthe tape directed by –forgive the redundancy– David Ayer in 2016.
Let’s remember that the film had mixed reviews (taking it to be bad) at the time of its release. And much of it, it is believed, is because the installment we saw in theaters was sooo different from what Ayer had in mind. It is even known that there were many cut scenes and situations with the script that modified what the director really wanted to show.
So, does that mean that the Ayer Cut of suicide squad? But of course. And since the latter was known, the fans have promoted that campaign of the #ReleaseTheAyerCut with the certainty that one day we could see the director’s cut… And maybe we’re not that far from that, huh.
On August 6, David Ayer revealed in a tweet that James Gunn does have plans to release the Ayer Cut of suicide squad. The filmmaker has been sharing photos and curiosities of that film on Twitter, and it was in a response to a fan that David wrote the following:
“There is a genuine curiosity and interest on the part of a lot of people. And I am aware that there is another group of people who have fun making fun of the movie. His comments are a perfect example of just how much debate the 2016 film stirs up in a negative way. Have you ever had a life experience that didn’t turn out the way you wanted, that dragged you down, that made you rethink everything?
I had it… All I know is that my ‘unseen movie’ (the Yesterday Cut) does better than the studio version. The interest in my court being a show seems real and organic. And Gunn told me that the time would have come to share it. He absolutely deserves to launch his DC universe without more drama over old projects. In a way, I’m chained to this thing. I am riding a tiger here and navigating this situation to the best of my ability. Life is a very strange journey.
With that, David Ayer not only makes it known that James Gunn wants to release the Ayer Cut of suicide squad; also gives an idea that the co-president of DC Studios will first accommodate his new universe, then make room for the Yesterday Cut. We’ll see what happens…
