Difficult times are ahead for the employees of the telecommunications group Vodafone. The new company management has identified a lack of efficiency and insufficient services as the core problem for the fact that one is currently hardly competitive.

Margherita Della Valle took over as CEO of the UK company in April and after her first few weeks in charge and taking stock, she is now taking the first steps in her quest to get the ailing group back on track. And that means primarily that around 11,000 jobs are to be cut, as Vodafone has now announced.

This corresponds to around 10 percent of the current total workforce. However, the deletions are to be made over the next three years. Della Valle justified this announcement by saying that the company’s organization had to be simplified significantly so that it could once again keep up with its competitors on the market.

No new plan for Germany

For the time being, the new management plan will not change anything for the German branch. In Germany, a measure was presented in April, under which, among other things, 900 jobs are to be cut. Thanks to its large mobile communications business and the takeover of various TV cable networks, Germany has meanwhile become the division with the highest sales in the entire group.

In this country, however, the problems are obvious and the company recently lost mainly customers with high sales. However, at least some of the problems are likely to be found in the group as a whole, because things were not going much better in Great Britain, Spain and Italy either. Only the smaller national subsidiaries, including in Turkey and in various African countries, ultimately helped that group sales merely stagnated and did not decline significantly.
