In what is already the highest-grossing video game film of all time, “ Super Mario Bros.” (Box office revenue of more than 800 million euros in three weeks, number one in Germany), the character of super villain “Bowser” is closely related to the cinema hero Jack Black (53) created.
In the original, the actor and musician speaks the villain character, lends her gestures and facial expressions as an opponent of the cheeky plumbers and reveals in BILD: “Gambling at home is a family affair.”

His sons Sammy (16) and Tommy (14) have a license to gamble at home with Jack and his wife Tanya (51, 17 years of marriage). Black: “It’s a damn good way to escape from reality. For me this is not wasted time. Anyone who says that is crazy.”
The father of two even thinks: “A good video game is as good as a classic novel, or a good composition by Wagner. Immerse yourself in other worlds and discover emotions. That has something of Shakespeare and teaches you something for life – for example rhythm. Hand and eye work better together. Our little one is a good drummer after playing. He’ll definitely have a band soon.”
Jack Black formed his rock band in 1994 with Kyle Gass (also an actor and musician).
Some educators tear their hair out. Black says: “I wouldn’t be where I am today without games. When I was 12, I was fascinated by two luminous lines flipping a dot back and forth in the game ‘Pong’. I earned my first money with Atari advertising for the classic ‘Pitfall’. You don’t forget the first ones. That’s the way it is with good songs, with books, in love and also with gambling – no matter how fat the boss is.”
Black himself is the man in Hollywood who’s had plenty of extra lives. In business since the early 90’s. Blockbusters like “King Kong”, animation hits like “Kung-Fu Panda”. Most recently, fans saw him in an episode of the “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian” as the brightly colored monarch of a small planet. “Some say I burn at many ends. I say: ‘The main thing is that it’s always nice and warm’.”
His film “School of Rock” from 20 years ago is iconic. As with video game cinema, Black was able to fully incorporate one of his passions. With his duo band Tenacious D, the all-rounder has millions of fans worldwide. “In the summer I’ll also be at a few festivals in Germany. Maybe we’ll play the Super Mario‘ live music in a slightly heavier version.”

Black continues, “My Bowser character is evil, but he also has a romantic side. He’s just in love with Princess Peach and tries to write her a love song. But he’s probably not as good as Lionel Richie and Diana Ross. They’ve written some of the best love songs of all time.”

Speaking of music: For the Hollywood star, it’s more of a passion than a hobby. “Of course I also know Schlager. Maybe coming Helene Fischer join us on the stage. I don’t know her personally, but I’ve heard of her. She is invited to the concert. We’re waiting for them at Rock am Ring.”
