Lego is developing a community designed Dungeons & Dragons building set. Together with rights holder Wizards of the Coast, Lego had started a competition in which hobbyists and fans were allowed to submit their own “DnD” designs. One of them is now being taken over and built by Lego designers.

Lucas Bolt’s design is subject to extensive modifications for the release of the finished product.

A set by Dutchman Lucas “bolt.builds” Bolt won, who works full-time as an environmental designer at Guerrilla Games on games like Horizon: Forbidden West. He designed and submitted a set including a tavern, a knight’s tower, a dragon and a viewer. Based on this design, Lego employees are now working on developing a set. In a blog entry, Lego points out that the draft can still change up to the final design.

The selection process for the Lego Ideas set was unusual: the community was allowed to vote for their favourite, but the final decision on the winner lay with Lego and “DnD” rights holders Wizards of the Coast. Lego does not reveal whether the bolt.builds set also won the community vote.

It is also unclear when the set could be finished. Lego launched the competition as part of a celebration of 50 years of “Dungeons & Dragons” – but the first tabletop game in the iconic fantasy universe was only released in 1974. It is therefore conceivable that the “DnD” set will not be released until next year .

Lego regularly hosts community competitions on its Ideas platform. Hobbyists whose building proposals are adopted by Lego receive 1 percent of the net sales generated with the product. In addition, Lucas Bolt is entitled to ten copies of the product that was developed based on his design.
