Microsoft has restored local security protection (Local Security Authority) with a Defender update. We reported about the problem back in February, but now there is a solution that also prevents forced recurring system restarts.

Windows users had been reporting device backup problems since February. After updating KB5007651, an update for the Windows Security Platform, there were indications that the “Protection by local security authority” integrated in Windows Security / Device Security was disabled.

Error message comes wrong

In the settings for device security, however, the function appeared as active, or the switch was still set to “active”. Microsoft has now given the all-clear. According to an entry in Windows Release Health Dashboard Did you find and fix the cause of the problem? The error message or message about deactivation was incorrectly displayed.

What is Local Security Protection?

The Local Security Authority (LSA) typically authenticates, logs, and maintains all information related to a system’s local security. The error affected all Windows 11 platforms, i.e. all editions of Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 21H2. Another update for the antimalware platform Microsoft Defender Antivirus KB5007651 (version 1.0.2303.27001) is currently being distributed. This update fixes the issue. We’ve translated Microsoft’s bug fix message for you:

“Local security protection is turned off”

After installing “Microsoft Defender Antivirus Platform Update – KB5007651 (Version 1.0.2302.21002)” you may receive a security message or warning stating that local security protection is disabled. Your device may be vulnerable”. Once protection is enabled, your Windows device may keep getting prompts that a restart is required.

  • Important: This issue only affects “Microsoft Defender Antivirus Antimalware Platform Update – KB5007651 (Version 1.0.2302.21002)”. All other Windows updates released on March 14, 2023 for affected platforms (KB5023706 and KB5023698) do not cause this issue.
  • Workaround: If you have LSA (Local Security Authority) protection enabled and you have restarted your device at least once, you can turn off the warning messages and ignore any further notifications asking for a restart. You can verify that LSA protection is enabled by looking in Event Viewer for the information available here. Important: We currently do not recommend any other workaround for this issue.
  • solution: This issue was addressed in an update to the Microsoft Defender Antivirus antimalware platform, KB5007651 (version 1.0.2303.27001). If you want to install the update before it is installed automatically, you must check for updates.
