Gladbeck.
After more than ten years, WAZ editor Marcus Esser is leaving the local editorial office in Gladbeck. His successor is ready and will join in May.

The readers of the Gladbecker WAZ know him – Marcus Esser has been one of the faces of the local editorial team for more than ten years. He accompanies the development of the city, is an attentive observer and knows the local political scene. Now he has decided to try something new again. Marcus Esser (57) leaves the local editorial office and switches to the municipal press office.

After years at Axel-Springer, the Express and then the WAZ sister newspaper WR in the Ennepe-Ruhr district and the WAZ/WR in Unna, Marcus Esser came to Gladbeck in 2012 and strengthened the local editorial team here. The development around the Karstadt store, the demolition of the old department store and finally the new building at a prominent location in the city center – that was one of the topics that he has been involved in for years, the same applies to the debate that has been going on for many years about the construction of the A 52.

The school landscape in Gladbeck was close to Marcus Esser’s heart

At the same time, as an editor, the Gladbeck school landscape was also close to his heart, which he followed over the years. Whether it was initially about the closure of elementary schools that were supposedly no longer needed, or today about the expansion and extension of the schools because there are now more students than originally forecast – the colleague was always close to the issue and has the development for them written down by readers.

He regularly showed full commitment, let himself be tapped for reports on blood donations, swung the wooden spoons with the readers at the WAZ campaign “That’s the pot” or sat down for test drives on the Ella scooters, which the Ele had been using since last year year in Gladbeck for rent for short distances.

Andrea Zaschka takes over the position in the local editorial office in Gladbeck

What did he remember in particular? The celebrations for the 100th birthday of the city of Gladbeck and the many encounters with the people of Gladbeck. It’s a pity, Marcus, that you’re leaving us, but we’ll continue to have regular contact with one another in the future, even after you’ve “changed sides”. We look forward to continuing our good cooperation with you.

Marcus Esser’s position in the local editorial office has already been filled again. Andrea Zaschka will be joining on May 2nd. The 27-year-old volunteered at WAZ and will support the local editorial team in the future. Welcome, we look forward to it!
