Mass migration and low birth rates could lead to an alarming decline in population in Cuba

UNITED NATIONS.- A recent report by the HIM projects that the population of Cuba will be drastically reduced, falling below six million by 2100. This significant decline is mainly attributed to the low birth rate and high emigration affecting the country.

The twenty-eighth edition of the United Nations World Population Prospects presents population estimates from 1950 to the present for 237 countries or regions, based on a detailed analysis of historical demographic trends. The study includes the results of 1,910 national population censuses conducted between 1950 and 2023, as well as data from civil registration systems and 3,189 nationally representative surveys, the website reports. CubaNet.

The 2024 revision, which provides population projections through 2100, reflects a range of possible scenarios at the global, regional and national levels. In the case of Cuba, the graph provided by the UN indicates that the projected Cuban population by that date will be less than six million, in contrast to the 2022 projection which was closer to seven million.

In 2023, Cuba recorded its lowest level of births in six decades, with only 90,300 births. This decline is largely due to the emigration of women of childbearing age and the lack of economic and social incentives to have children.

Emigration also plays a crucial role in this trend. Cuba has seen a considerable outflow of professionals and young people seeking better opportunities abroad. This mass exodus, driven by unfavorable economic and political conditions, places Cuba’s net emigration rate among the highest in the world.

The combination of a low birth rate and a high rate of emigration is accelerating the ageing of the population. It is estimated that by 2100, approximately 2.5 million Cubans will be over 60 years old.

According to an independent demographic study conducted by prominent Cuban economist and demographer Juan Carlos Albizu-Campos, Cuba’s population is expected to decline by 18% between 2022 and 2023, to 8.62 million people.
