O The New York City Fire Department deployed a robotic dog to search for survivors and assess the destruction after a parking lot collapse in Manhattan on Tuesday that killed one person and injured five others. .

According to The New York Post, the robot – dubbed ‘Spot’ – was used after the “structural integrity of the building” was deemed unsafe for firefighters to enter.

“Thank God we had the robotic dog that managed to get into the building. This is ideally what we talk about not sending a human being into an unstable building,” said Mayor Eric Adams, quoted by the New York Post.

According to the publication, the robot was acquired by the New York Fire Department for $75,000 (about 65,000 euros) a year ago to operate in search and rescue missions.

In a video, which you can see in the gallery above, you can see ‘Spot’ entering the wreckage of the building. However, the mission was unsuccessful and the robotic animal ended up falling when trying to climb onto a piece of broken concrete.
